Setiap tahun lebih dari 32 milyar meter kubik air yang sudah diolah hilang karena kebocoran dari jaringan-jaringan distribusi. Sementara, 16 milyar meter kubik lainnya tersalurkan kepelanggan tanpa ditagih karena pencurian, pembacaan meter yang buruk, atau korupsi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satu perkiraan konservatif tentang biaya tahunan total yang harus ditanggung perusahaan air minum di seluruh dunia adalah US$14 milyar. Di sejumlah negara berpenghasilan rendah, kerugian ini mewakili 50-60% dari pelayanan air dengan perkiraan global sekitar 35%.
